You're heading down the stairs at night for a glass of water, and you'd rather not hit the main light or feel for the wall.
Finding the top step in the dark is a small worry, and a switch on the far side of the landing doesn't help. The strip has a motion sensor built in, so the light comes on as you walk into range.
